Tasmania is the smallest region anywhere in Australia, but it is also arguably one of the best for tourists to visit. It was formerly known as Apple Isle and even today goes by that nickname as well as other self-proclaimed names such as the Natural State and the Island of Rejuvenation. What makes Tasmania unique is that despite its small size, it would still take you a few months before you could ever hope to have seen everything the state has to offer. It is around 70,000 square kilometers in area and over 30% of that land surface is part of either a reserve, a National Park or a World Heritage Site. With a population of just around 500,000 people, there’s definitely a lot of space for tourists on the island.

There are many ways for the intrepid explorer and the cultured tourist both to reach the island of Tasmania. The capital city of Tasmania, Hobart, as well as other major cities of Launceston and Devonport have national airports that are serviced by all the major national and regional Australian carriers. In addition, people can travel to Devonport by ferry which departs from the Victorian capital of Melbourne multiple times each day. Once you are actually in Tasmania, you can travel around by car, bus or simply walk if you wish. There is no passenger rail service on the island however, so don’t expect to be able to use rail to get around.

As previously mentioned, much of the Tasmanian area is dominated by natural sights and one of the most popular ones in the area has to be Mt. Field National Park. The Mt. Field National Park is an area that really attracts thousands of tourists each year not only because of the beautiful natural sights and sounds that one can see there, but also because of its containment of Russell Falls. Russell Falls are the most famous waterfall formation in Tasmania and arguably in the whole country. What makes them so attractive is that they are in a tropical rainforest setting, rather than the normal setting of a number of other famous waterfall formations.

People that don’t enjoy the natural sights should probably stick to other states, but if you do want to visit Tasmania then make sure you pay a visit to the state capital of Hobart. With a population of just 250,000 people it is rather intimate for a state capital, but there are still attractions to see. Hobart is home to the Salamanca Market on Saturday morning where a large portion of the city gets spontaneously converted to shops; a great sight for tourists to witness. Hobart also has an art gallery and a maritime museum for people looking to dig deep into the culture that used to and still does dwell in the Tasmanian areas.
