Not necessarily in terms of ethnic or cultural diversity, but there is a lot of geographical and climate diversity in the area as one travels from South to North. South Australia is perhaps best known for two regions; the city of Adelaide and the region of Kangaroo Island.Adelaide is the state capital of Southern Australia and with a population in excess of one million people, it is the largest city in the state. Most of the population within the sparsely populated state resides somewhere in the Adelaide area. Adelaide can be reached by air or through any of the different highways that feed into it. Many people enjoy Adelaide because not only is it fairly cosmopolitan, but it is also nestled right into the beautiful Australian wine country. The McLaren Vale is a wine region in Australia that is known for its creation of some excellent domestic wine labels. The Barossa Valley and Clare Valley are both also wine regions that create some scrumptious wines that are tasted all over the world. All three of these Australian wine regions are within a day’s drip from Adelaide and because of that many tourists use Adelaide as their home base during their vacation. Kangaroo Island is a small island located around 15 km off the shore of mainland Australia and it can be reached in less than an hour by ferry from the mainland. What makes Kangaroo Island so special is that it is truly an ecological hodgepodge of everything natural that makes people want to travel to Australia. Beautiful rock formations, sandy shores and a number of exotic animals (amongst them the island namesake) can be seen on Kangaroo Island. In addition to the excellent wilderness, there are also very friendly locals that live on Kangaroo Island that you can interact with. A lot of the communication between the locals is non-vocal in nature and watching people communicate with body language gestures can be quite fascinating to do. All in all, South Australia definitely have a lot to offer tourists of all kinds. From the urban, cosmopolitan getaway that can be had in the city of Adelaide to the beautiful wilderness of places like Kangaroo Island, you can quite easily pass all of your vacation in South Australia if you wish. The region itself is a universal microcosm for the kinds of attractions that are available everywhere else on the continent. |
