Antigua and Barbuda are components of the whole Lesser Antilles archipelago along with other islands like Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago and Trinidad on the southern side and St. Martin and Anguilla to the northwest.

The islands were colonized by the British in 1632 and served as stud farms for slaves to work on. They were the last places to abolish slavery under the British dominance. With the collapse of sugar cane farming supported by the slaves, they came to be known for beautiful beaches and clear waters.

Today they are the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean, with an old world charm about them. The capital city is Saint John's located in Antigua while Barbuda's largest town is Codrington. The islands are dotted with medieval forts and cobbled stone pathways in the town.

The English harbor area has the old fort, which houses the prized cannons used by Admiral Nelson during the various Caribbean campaigns. St. John has the old world cathedrals and good museums with native artifacts and curios related to the history of the islands.

The main tourist attractions are the twin towered cathedrals, museums and restored colonial buildings and modern shopping complexes that cater to the people. Water sports and other related aqua sports are gaining prominence with the facility of - fishing, swimming and scuba diving on the beaches the islands are famous for.

The perfect time to visit Antigua and Barbuda, are during the winter months (mid-December to mid-April) when the temperature is 81°F (27°C) and happens to be peak tourist season. The rest of the year is comparatively cheaper but the weather does not support tourist activities due to excessive rainfall.
